Treatments

Expert assessment, diagnosis and a clear plan

Physiotherapy is so much more than basic massage or exercise therapy. It is proven to be effective in treating many musculo-skeletal conditions, and it is now an integral part of modern medicine. Open any treatment to read more.

PhysiotherapyDuring your visit to the clinic you will receive an expert assessment, diagnosis and an effective treatment. You can also expect a prognosis and timeline for your recovery as well as a clear treatment plan.

All of our staff are experienced qualified physiotherapists who have been working for many years in musculoskeletal medicine. Physiotherapy brings together the best parts of all forms of manual treatment (manipulations, joint mobilizations, deep tissue massage, joint stabilization to name but a few) enabling a tailored treatment approach for each individual.

Our physiotherapists have also undertaken specialist post graduate training and qualifications in the areas listed here.

Sports injuryAt The Physio Co. we are lucky enough to have physiotherapists who have worked directly for major sporting organisations. To rehabilitate a sports injury properly, it helps to have worked with athletes competing at the highest level.

The role of the physiotherapist within sport is fairly simple. They diagnose the injury at the start and then manage the rehabilitation of the athlete back to competition, using other professions along the way if they wish.

So don't settle for a therapist that treats the occasional sporting enthusiast. Next time you're injured, call us and you'll see why many North Devon athletes choose us.

Back pain clinicExtensive experience in back pain relief. In most cases, especially in back pain lasting more than 12 weeks, the most effective approach is a tailored structured exercise approach in addition to up to nine sessions of massage or manual therapy (NICE guidance).

Physiotherapy is often considered the most effective treatment of low back pain because it can draw on a combination of treatment approaches. Here at The Physio Co. we have had many years' experience treating back pain and have even been part of clinical research into the area of non-specific back pain.

If you are not progressing with your current form of treatment, or you are expected to keep going back for reviews and adjustments, why not see if physiotherapy is more effective?

Specialist shoulder rehabThe shoulder is one of the most complex joints in the body. Our physiotherapists have undertaken post graduate training in shoulder rehab and work alongside orthopaedic consultants at NDDH and Exeter.

The key to a successful treatment program is an accurate assessment. Your treating physiotherapist must identify the damaged tissue causing the pain, but more importantly the reason why these structures have become damaged in the first place, and give you a tailored and structured strengthening program to accompany your treatment.

We commonly see patients ranging from athletes who need to get back to their training, to the elderly patient whose GP has been unable to help. Even if you have been putting up with your pain for years, call us for an appointment.

Knee injuriesAfter a knee injury it is important to get an accurate assessment done to establish which structure in the knee is damaged, so you have a prognosis and a treatment plan for the weeks ahead.

Every week we hear patients tell us 'my doctor told me to give up running'. Many running injuries happen when the biomechanics of the knee are not at their optimum, and they can be fixed with the appropriate treatment and strength training. We work with runners of all standards and ages.

Arthritis is one of the easiest conditions to treat, but one which is rarely given a chance. Put simply: Physiotherapy works for arthritic knees.

Neuro rehabNeurological physiotherapy helps adults with a neurological impairment to accelerate their recovery and improve their quality of life. There are no waiting lists and treatment can begin instantly.

Our treatment protocols are derived from world renowned treatment programmes, including the Carr & Shepherd Concept (motor relearning), the Brunstrom Approach (synergistic movement), the Bobath Concept (normal movement), Conductive Education and Functional Rehabilitation.

In practice that means stretching, re-educating normal movement patterns, developing gross and fine motor skills, balance, strengthening, and improving standing and walking quality. Please note that home visits are available with this service.

AcupunctureOur fully trained acupuncturist is a member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP). Acupuncture stimulates nerve endings so the body produces its own natural pain relieving chemicals.

Step 1 is an initial consultation, where we look at your past medical history, lifestyle and current medication to guide your treatment plan.

Step 2 is a programme of regular acupuncture sessions here at the clinic. A typical programme runs for around 6 sessions, weekly or at greater intervals as required.

Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)A non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate healing in injured or painful tissues, increasing blood flow, stimulating tissue repair and influencing pain-signalling nerves.

It is used particularly when symptoms have not responded to exercise-based rehabilitation alone. The research shows shockwave works best with the correct supporting exercise plan, which is why you should have an experienced chartered physiotherapist administer your shockwave therapy and treatment plan.

Clinical PilatesClinical Pilates (as distinct to generic Pilates classes) applies carefully selected exercises to patients with specific injuries, for optimal gains while minimising the risk of aggravating the injury.

Clinical Pilates has been developed alongside scientific research, making it evidence based, and it is the Pilates used by major sporting institutions such as the British and Australian Institutes of sport. If you are interested in starting Pilates for your injury, it is essential to have a review with a physiotherapist to assess the suitability of a core stability program for you.

What patients say

A firm favourite of patients and referring doctors

“I couldn’t get a GP appointment for over a week so called The Physio Co. I was seen the next day for an assessment. I was diagnosed with a bulged disc, and was given a massage to relive tension. And exercises to do at home. Booked another appointment while there. My back is a lot less painful just from today’s session and advice. Thank god. I would definitely recommend this company.”
Kris Pugsley, Google review, July 2026
“Johnny's great. He really tries to get to the bottom of your problem and doesn't suggest you go on with treatment any longer than necessary, particularly if he can't get to the bottom of things.”
Pasty man, Google, November 2025
